―EthosLab

EthosLab (birthday: August 20), or simply Etho, is a Canadian gaming YouTuber who primarily uploads Minecraft gameplay videos. He was a member of the once-popular MindCrack server and is currently a member of the also popular Hermitcraft server. He is best known though for his single player Minecraft let's play series that started December 17, 2010 (over 13 years ago) and is still going on with 584 episodes as of November 6, 2023.

YouTuber Influence[]

Etho has had an influence on a bunch of YouTubers, most of which currently upload Minecraft or started out on YouTube uploading Minecraft. Here are several instances YouTubers shown how Etho had an impact on them. MrBeast called Etho's lets play series the "Best series on YouTube" in a comment on episode 512 and he said how he used to watch Etho years ago. Grandayy said his lets play series made him nostalgic in a comment on this video. Xisumavoid has said several times how Etho was the reason he started YouTube. IJevin commented how he has been watching Etho since around episode 43 of his let's play series on this video. Wattles commented "ETHO IS KING" on this video. YouTubers iskall85, Tango Tek, and Mumbo Jumbo have frequently commented on older videos of Etho's.

Minecraft[]

Etho's first video was posted on November 12, 2010[1] and was about his idea for a boat dispenser. This was the first showcase of his redstone abilities within the game.

Singleplayer[]

Vanilla[]

One of Etho's most popular series is his Minecraft survival single-player series titled "Etho Plays Minecraft."[2] It is still ongoing in a second world that he moved to after the 1.8 Beta update. He changed due to the Adventure Update which introduced several new biomes to the game and wished to experience them without having to travel thousands of blocks.

In the second season, he had built his base underground called the Mancave. It holds many features such as a UFO above the cow farm where cows can be fished into, a slime farm with the option to move the donor tree farm, a Tamagotchi like creation named Wilson, a large automatic brewing lab, an underground village, and several more. More recently, he has begun to "enhance" the above ground portion of his world.

Crash Landing[]

Etho started his Crash Landing series on the 5th September, 2014. 30 episodes later he ended the series, deciding it would be more fun to play on the modded world.

Modded Minecraft[]

Some time ago, Etho compiled a selection of his favourite mods and put them together to start a new, modded, series. Although it occasionally crashes, Etho has enjoyed playing this pack, along with the enjoyment of his viewers. If you wish to download this pack that Etho made himself, simply go to one of his modded videos, look in the description, and you will find instructions on how to do it. The series ended on the 5th of December 2016, on Episode 77 after the save file was corrupted.

He recently started another modded series in version 1.16.5, and the series has 10 episodes as of February 7th, 2023. Some noteworthy mods in this series are the create mod and a mod that adds gear and mobs from Minecraft Dungeons. His starter base in this series is a Japanese-inspired style house on the border of a cherry blossom forest and a large pine forest.

TerraFirmaCraft[]

Etho has three seasons of TerraFirmaCraft on his channel, the first one being very successful on his channel and showing the mod's tech tree as he discovered it. The reason why it ended is unclear (Edit: Etho announced the reason for ending the series in one of his 'Etho Plays Minecraft' Episodes). Season 2 of TerraFirmaCraft began on 17 October 2015, with a better understanding of the mod. Etho rapidly progressed through it. He was hoping to reach the end of the tech tree again after several updates and changes to TerraFirmaCraft by the mod's developers. The series ended on the 5th of February 2016 on Ep 18.

In late 2018, TerraFirmaCraft returned to Etho's channel as TerraFirmaPunk, a modpack with TFC in it.

Battle Bane[]

Battle Bane is a PvP game designed and created by Etho. He started this series so that he could have fun with command blocks and creative mode redstone. It is currently one of his longest and most inconsistent series. He posts an episode about once a year, though sometimes longer, and others shorter. Often times, Etho forgets to make an episode and has to be reminded by his comment section. There are no plans to finish the game, and no timelines on when a playable version will be available. Most of his recent videos have been updating videos where he has to go and rework something because a command got changed in an update or something like that. He has plans to make it possible to play this with any world that you choose.

MindCrack[]

MindCrack: Vanilla[]

Etho joined Mindcrack in 2011 and left in early 2015. He left because he didn't want to be part of the Minecrack Brand, which was becoming more money orientated - Etho mentioned in a video that he prefers doing minecraft for the fun. He was apart of MindCrack seasons 3, 4, and 5. One of his most popular projects from MindCrack was the death games, starting in season 3 as a retaliation prank, then got brought back in season 4 as a full game. He returned on season 6, as he was still whitelisted, to help VintageBeef prank PauseUnpause. He also returned in season 7 to build a house with VintageBeef.

UHC[]

Etho participated in Mindcrack UHC since Season 3, except Seasons 7, 12, 14 through 20, and 21. Etho was the winner of Season 8, having killed six other players. He stopped participating in UHC's just before he left MindCrack.

MindCrack FTB[]

Etho's MindCrack FTB videos are some of the earliest modded videos that he released. There are 2 seasons of MindCrack FTB. Season 1 ran from late 2012 to late 2013 totaling in 59 videos. Season 2 ran from Feb. 2014 to May 2014 totaling in 28 episodes. This series is one of the few that feature a different intro.

CrackPack[]

Near the end of his MindCrack days, they started a series with a custom modpack. This series started soon after season 2 of MindCrack FTB ended with only a couple weeks in between. The series started in May 2014 and ran through Aug. 2014 with a total of 22 episodes. The series consisted of 2 sides that had several PvP battles and base invading. The series ended due to technical issues explained in Etho's last video. This series features the same intro as his MindCrack FTB videos.

HermitCraft[]

Hermitcraft: Vanilla[]

Etho joined the HermitCraft Server at some point during the beginning of 2015, with his first official HC Video being released on the 3rd March 2015. He was fairly inactive until the 2016 re-launch of the server when he started playing regularly again. He is always seen in episodes with Docm77, a fellow Minecraft YouTuber. In Hermitcraft season 5 Etho was active once again, but only up to episode 11. He returned to Hermitcraft in Season 7, skipping Season 6 altogether. He has been much more active, seeming happier and more energetic in regards to Minecraft in general.

Season 3[]

Etho uploaded his first video on the Hermitcraft server on 3 March 2015 when he toured the server with Biffa Plays Indie Games. In Episode 3, EthosLab participated in the Boom Box competition made by Tango Tek alongside ImpulseSV, Xisumavoid, FalseSymmetry, Sl1pg8r - Daily Stuff and Things! and Zueljin Gaming.

Etho made a medieval style underground base during the Season, which at one point was pranked by the TEA Agency, made up of XisumaVoid and Biffa.

Etho uploaded his final episode on 29 September 2015 where he competed in a round of ABBA Caving against Zueljin.

Season 4[]

Etho made his return to the Hermitcraft server when Season 4 started in February 2016. He teamed up with friend and fellow former Mindcracker Docm77, and together they built the Danglands - a minigame district made up of games such as Whack-A-Mole, Boat Racing, The Fat Princess and Connect 4. Due to the time zone difference between Germany and Canada, where Doc and Etho live respectively, the duo struggled to find good times to record and as a result didn't post many videos together. Etho would upload his final video in Season 4 on 21 September 2016, where he welcomed another Mindcracker, VintageBeef, to the server.

Season 5[]

Etho returned to the Hermitcraft server when Season 5 started in April 2017. For this Season, Etho teamed up with BdoubleO100, Docm77 and VintageBeef to form the NHO (New Hermit Order). The group formed due to them all being friends and previously playing on the Mindcrack server. Together they ventured through the Nether and connected to a jungle far away from spawn dubbed the "NHO Jungle". Etho would go on to create his Nexus - a giant redstone sorting system in the jungle. He also teamed up with the other members of the NHO to prank Mumbo Jumbo's base, where they covered it with NHO propaganda. Etho would upload his final episode on 15 July 2017. This is Etho's shortest Hermitcraft season to date.

Season 7[]

Etho's base is located in the jungle on the western side of the known map. His closest neighbor is Xisumavoid. Unlike the other Hermits' bases, he built his base from the outside in, adding on rooms and builds to the floor plan, but with no exterior walls to make it a finished structure.

Etho has two shops in the shopping district. His first store is the Ice Shop. It has the Canadian custom of removing one's shoes before entering. His second store is Shade-E-E's, a "subscription service". He held a grand opening drawing of a lifetime supply of free glass, but it was a prank, filling up the empty spaces in their chests with light gray stained glass panes renamed "Congratulations on your FREE glass! xD". He then charged a diamond block to unsubscribe. Now he is offering gardening services, which entail a dirt square with various flowers making an Etho head pixel art. This "gardening service", however, also brought a few hives of bees with it, filling the hermits bases with hidden beehives that made a constant, annoying buzz. As a result, Shade-E-E's now also charges for a pest relocation service. Shade-E-E's also offers an incentive in which a Hermit can receive 3 diamonds to sign up another Hermit for a Shade-E-E's service package.

Following this, Etho opened a temporary hidden shop, "Sneak-E-E's", which is completely made of shulker boxes so it has a smaller render distance. Etho did this in retaliation of the new road access passes put out by GoodTimesWithScar. In Sneak-E-Es, Etho sells assorted goodies, but once the shop sells out of inventory, it is moved so that GoodTimesWithScar cannot tax it. The position of Sneak-E-Es was directly above Iskall85's Slime Shop. It has since been moved to the 2nd floor of Threads by Scara, but was then removed from here aswell when GoodTimesWithScar found it.

Etho also built a shop on its own artificial island just off the coast of the shopping district, similarly to Shade-E-E's, called Brain-E-E's where hermits could pay a diamond to answer questions, and recieve wood as well as their diamond back if they answered correctly.

In Aqua Town, Etho built Order-Lee-E's, which sold shulker boxes containing similar blocks to help with organization.

This season of Hermitcraft stands out for Etho because its his first season where he is active and uploading videos of it throughout the entire season. The season also marks the first time he put music in his videos, where he put Minecraft noteblock music in it (typically Cave Story remixes), as well as used noteblocks all throughout the season, most notably when he built Keralis a complete real life song out of noteblocks.

Season 8[]

In this season he and Iskall85 quickly teamed up and moved to a shattered savanna, and there set up base. He and Iskall share a base, with the goal being to create their base around the terrain and encorperate it into their base design.

He was part of the no-wings-club, but has since reached 1000 days. He was not able to use his elytra however, because the gravity and moon stuff going on made it too difficult.

Season 9[]

EthosLab has said on Twitter that he will be joining Season 9 late due to his family's health. On his first episode of Double Life, EthosLab confirmed he had joined the server, but logged out soon after. His first recorded appearance on the server was in VintageBeef's 19th episode. He posted his first video on June 27th, 2022.

When EthosLab arrived on the server, the other Hermits were eager to help him get his season started quickly with supplies, but EthosLab wanted first earn his place on the server. Therefore with a little assistance from TangoTek he exiled himself to a distant land until he earned his right to return by defeating a raid on his own. Soon afterwards, EthosLab secretly moved into the basement of BdoubleO100's diorite Monolith. While setting up his starter base there he had some trouble with the other dwellers of the basement.

After a seeing a strange redstone machine in a dream, EthosLab set up his new camp in a jungle biome southwest of the Shopping District and endeavored to build the machine. It turned out to be the latest version of his Shulker Box Sorter, which he used as the core component of his highly automated storage system, which would form the heart of his main base for the season.

Decked Out[]

Etho was an avid participator in TangoTek's first Decked out, playing and posting many hours of him playing the in-Minecraft game.

Decked Out 2[]

EthosLab actively participated in all nine phases of Decked Out 2, and even went on to win the game as a whole.

3rd Life is a mini series started by Grian where several YouTubers are put in a small Minecraft world and have only 3 lives. Once they get to their last life, they must kill the other players and if they lose their last life, they're are out of the game. Grian stated that the series is mainly an "experiment". They also film once a week for only a few hours, so the series lasts at least a month.

Season 1[]

At the beginning of the series, Etho allied with TangoTek in the village. He would soon after move with Impulse to the swamp and along with ImpulseSV, create an alliance there. Etho created a mini castle in the middle of the swamp made out of wool. GoodTimesWithScar ended burning down the castle twice throughout the series. Along with Tango and Impulse, Etho would join the Red King Army, an alliance lead by Rendog and InTheLittleWood. Other members of the alliance were MCSkizzleman, Bigbst4tz2, and for a short period of time, SmallishBeans. Tango and later Impulse would leave the alliance and join the rival Crastle/Sand People alliance, which contained Grian, Scar, BdoubleO100, Dangthatsalongname, Solidarity, SmallishBeans, and ZombieCleo. Etho lost his first life to Tango during a firing squad set up by Bdouble0100. He lost his second life to GoodTimesWithScar while searching through his sandcastle. He lost his third and final life to fire damage from Impulse. Although he didn't win the series, Etho was able to last to the final session, in which he lost his final life.

Season 2[]

Etho allied with Bdouble0100, TangoTek, and Skizzleman and created the BEST team (Bdubs, Etho, Skizz, and Tango). Together EthosLab and Bdoubleo100 built a snow fort. Later, when Bdubs turned red, they split their snow fort down the middle to share. After Etho's main ally, Bdubs, lost all his lives, Etho allied with RenDog, InTheLittleWood, and ZombieCleo to create The Shadow Alliance.

Season 3[]

Double Life is the third season of the "3rd Life" Hardcore SMP by Grian where each player has three lives, and becomes hostile on their last "red" life. The world is enclosed within a border, and there is only 1 enchanting table, which in this season was located in an Ancient City. The twist for this season was that each of the 14 players was randomly assigned a "soulmate" who they would share a health bar with. Etho's soulmate was SmallishBeans.

Season 4[]

The most recent installment of the life series followed the same theme of green, yellow, and red lives, with yellow lives being hostile towards greens, and reds being hostile to everyone. This season brought back the Boogyman, and the main twist is that every player began with a 24-hour timer, with every death causing the player to lose one hour off their clock, with the exception of Boogyman kills, where the player will lose two hours. This season, Etho's main allies were Skizzleman, TangoTek, and ImpulseSV, the four of them forming team T.I.E.S. (Tango, Impulse, Etho, and Skizzle). Etho was also allied with his in-game son, Bdouble0100, and on complicated terms with his other son, GoodTimesWithScar, and in-game ex-wife, ZombieCleo. In the final session of season 4 (session 8), after many players were out of the game and the end was near, Grian "enacted the sword", automatically allying Etho and Grian. Grian was able to do this because of his gift of a diamond sword to Etho in the first session. Etho's final life was lost due to fall damage whilst fighting Dangthatsalongname and InTheLittleWood.

Season 5[]

This season, each player had three lives, and thirty hearts that did not regenerate. Players had one heart each session that they could gift to a player of their choosing. At the beginning of each session, every player received a Secret Task. Upon succeeding a task, a player may be rewarded up to ten hearts, and goodies such as ancient debris, potions, etc. There are no repercussions for failing a normal task. If the player deems their original task too difficult or outright impossible, they may reroll for a hard task. Failing a hard task can take hearts away from the player, but succeeding can earn them up to twenty hearts. This season, Etho allied and based with ZombieCleo. Grian joined the alliance later on, and the three of them were unofficially dubbed The Roomies.

Other[]

The Midnight Society[]

In late 2012 to early 2013, Etho released several videos of him playing Minecraft PvP maps with several people known as The Midnight Society. However, the most common appearances are from three_two, last_username, Unhost, MEOLA, Rixiot, TiggyLi, and Raid3r just to name a few. The maps that Etho posted videos of are Nail, Cluster Chunk, Revolution, and Hoodoo. Research leads to believe that there are other games and maps that Etho participated in, but did not upload videos of.

Etho spent some time playing “DVZ” with BruceWillakers and PauseUnpause, known by their YouTube names.

Team Canada[]

Team Canada (Etho, VintageBeef, and PauseUnpause) was formed during season 3 of the MindCrack vanilla server. Originally they just did large scale pranks together, the most notable being the sky shrooms prank on GuudeBoulderfist and BdoubleO100 near the beginning of Etho's series. Since then, they have done several series together including several CTM (Complete The Monument) maps, Sky Factory 2.5, Captive Minecraft 4, and Roguelike Adventures & Dungeons. . Team Canada started a Sky Factory series and has been quite successful. Sky factory is a modded survival challenge where you start off with a Skyblock Theme and attempt to accomplish quests/achievements. Etho uploaded videos for this series once every two days.

Non-Minecraft Games[]

It is currently his 3rd most popular active series on the channel, each video usually gets over 150,000 views.

Cube World[]

An RPG game with a blocky style similar to minecraft. Etho posted 8 videos in mid 2013. Cube World is no longer available.

Minecraft Skin[]

Etho's Minecraft skin is based on the character Kakashi Hatake from the Japanese manga and anime franchise Naruto. In episode 234 of his LP, he revealed that he chose the Kakashi skin because it was one of the most detailed skins at the time (even though there are better versions nowadays, he still hangs on to this version). He has changed his skin for the first time in 6 years on the 25th of june 2022, in which he removed a Etho face on his stomache and back

Appearance[]

Etho has not shown what he looks like, but he has given some descriptions of himself. He is 6'2"[3]. He said he is very skinny because of his "crazy metabolism"[4]. He sometimes wears glasses[5]. He has a stubble/beard[6]. He has light skin, blue eyes, and brown hair[7]. He has similar hair to one of those possible in "cube world"[8]. He has stated that he walks with his feet at an angle[9].
